How to Purchase the Perfect Pair of Jeans

We’re betting that most of you have a favourite pair of jeans that are worn more then any other item in your wardrobe.  Denim is hardwearing and can be dressed down for everyday wear – or glammed up with killer heels and a glitzy top for a special occasion.

Picking the perfect pair of jeans can sometimes be tough. There are so many designs to consider— skinny, straight leg, high-waist or bootcut style—and how do you know which one will suit you best?

If the thought of purchasing a new pair of jeans fills you with dread, then read our guide on how to select the right cut and shade of jeans that will best suit your body type and individual style.

Slip into skinnies

Despite the name, skinny jeans have nothing to do with your body shape.  Skinny means that this style of jean is simply the slimmest at the ankle. Because skinny jeans are typically made from stretch denim, they look great on everyone—providing you choose the right colour.

For those of us with a ‘pear’ or ‘hourglass’ shape, choose an indigo or dark wash denim, while ‘apple’ or ‘athletic’ frames should opt for a lighter or stone-washed look. Net-a-Porter offer a wide range of drainpipe denim in all hues from black to berry red!

We love how skinny jeans can be teamed with an oversized jumper that offers the ultimate in comfort as Autumn draws ever closer. Pop on a pair of knee-high boots, such as this tan leather lined pair from Clarks—and you’re ready for a refreshing walk in the falling leaves!

Skinnies can also be dressed up with skyscraper heels for a celeb-style night on the town.  Team with a sparkly top and splash out on this pair of silver Michael Kors shoes and rock the A-list look!

Play it straight

The simple cut of straight leg jeans makes them a more laid-back option than their skinnier sibling. Slim-fit jeans are flattering on curvy and athletic body shapes, as they are loose enough to skim the thighs and ankles without hugging your body too snugly.

A classic straight jean will look timeless when paired with flat ballet pumps, a nautical Breton-striped top and a blazer – a favourite casual look of both the Duchess of Cambridge and Audrey Hepburn. Swap your ballet pumps for trainers for a more relaxed look—ideal for shopping or weekends away.

Slim-fit jeans are fast becoming a staple of the workplace too.  Dress codes in the office are increasingly more relaxed, so you can pair your jeans with a crisp white blouse, and these sassy leopard print kitten heels to add a quirky touch to office chic.  To make your jeans appear more formal, choose a black or dark wash for a smart, on-trend vibe.

The beauty of the bootcut jean

Bootcut jeans, such as these stylish offerings from Tommy Hilfiger, have never fallen out of favour with fashionistas—and its easy to see why as they are so easy to wear and flattering for a curvier shape.

The slightly flared cut is a modern take on 1970’s bell-bottoms and works really well with blocked heel boots from one to three inches high—make a statement with this pale blue leather Top Shop pair peeping out from under the hem.

Ripped bootcut jeans can be styled with a casual top, to create a relaxed weekend look. Team with a slouchy jumper and cosy up on the sofa with a box set—or add a stylish shoulder bag and cowboy boots and enjoy a laid-back lunch date with friends.

For a 2020 take on the bootcut jean, invest in a cropped pair that sit 1 to 3 inches above the ankles to show off your fabulous footwear.

Discover the denim hue that’s right for you

When it comes to the colour of your jeans, it really is all about your preference. Generally, darker hues such as indigo or black are considered dressier, and mid-wash or lighter colours are great for casual wear and look particularly good on summer days.

For an autumnal twist on denim, treat yourself to a bottle green or dark red pair of jeans to match the changing colours of the season. We love this high-waisted pair of green jeans from Debenhams, which are currently on sale and reduced from £65 to just £39.

All rise!

From low-rise jeans to the high-waisted variety, the height of the waistband our jeans changes with the season. But rather than follow trends, it’s a good idea to stick with a rise that suits your body type and feels comfortable.

Low rise jeans are a great choice if you want to show off your midriff or curvy hips.  Athletic body shapes can look amazing in low rise jeans—but will need a stretchy denim style to stop them hanging to low if you do not have curvy hips fill the material.

For a figure-friendly option, mid-rise jeans are the go-to choice. They are compatible with all lengths of tops, from cropped to tunic-style, and offer a little more support around the middle than a low-slung pair of jeans.

High waisted jeans are often viewed as a Seventies denim trend, but for a classic look, team them with a tucked in shirt and a tweed jacket for a country walk.   We’re fans of these burgundy jeans from Freemans — add a pair of smart brown ankle boots and a tan leather shoulder bag you’ll have an office-friendly look for dress down Friday!
