Best Supermarket Dine In Meals For Valentine’s Day

We didn’t realise it at the time, but Valentine’s Day 2020 was one of the UK’s last chances to celebrate without Covid-19 restrictions in place. Valentine’s Day 2021 is going to be quite different – but just because we can’t take our loved one for a slap-up meal in a restaurant, it doesn’t mean you can’t have a wining and dining experience at home.

The nation’s supermarkets have come up trumps with a range of delicious dinners to share with your favourite foodie.  We’ve rounded up some of the best ‘dine in for two deals’ on offer to make this Valentine’s Day memorable:

M&S: Price £20

M&S is kicking off Valentine’s Day with a romantic breakfast in bed hamper.  For £30, you’ll receive a heart-shaped ‘love sausage’, a punnet of Piccolino cherry tomatoes on the vine and four crumpets.  Of course, being M&S ‘this isn’t just an ordinary breakfast’ but includes indulgent gooey chocolate hearts and a bottle of peach and passion fruit Bellini.

For a three-course dinner, the M&S Dine In meal is available in-store from February 10. Choose a starter, main course and dessert for just £20.

Starters include a salmon sharing platter, gastropub duck croquettes and a vegan mushroom pate. There are 10 delicious sounding main courses to pick from, including rump steak and peppercorn sauce, stuffed seabass fillets and a ‘love linguine’ dish with pork and beef meatballs in a rich tomato sauce. All main meals include a side dish from a wide selection.

If you have any room left for dessert, you can opt for a profiterole stack with chocolate sauce or a strawberry and rose wine jelly topped with edible glitter.  The deal even includes a choice of prosecco, wine or fruit presse.

Aldi: Prices from under £7.50

Aldi launched their ‘lovers on a budget menu’ from February 10, which is an amazing deal that comes in at just £7.47 for duck breast, dauphinoise potatoes and a pair of white chocolate and raspberry cheesecakes.

If you’d prefer to adorn your table for two with steak, the budget supermarket is offering a pair of 36-day aged sirloins with pink peppercorn butter for just £6.49. Add a helping of triple cooked chips with beef dripping for £1.99 and you’ve got a meal for two for less than £8.50.

You can even pick up a bottle of prosecco for £3.99 to enjoy with dinner.

Because the Aldi deal is incredibly purse-friendly, you could also treat your partner to a bunch of flowers.  A single red rose from Aldi is just 79p and you can grab a dozen red roses for £19.99.

Tesco: Price £10 or £15

Pick up all the ingredients for a quiet night in at Tesco, who have created a host of heavenly treats from their Tesco Finest range for couples to share.  The deal doesn’t include a starter, but you get a choice of chicken cabernet sauvignon, beef lasagne or a potato tipped bacon and chicken pie, with a side dish of chunky chips or peas, leeks and pancetta.

For dessert, choose from chocolate and orange cheesecake slices or two passion fruit and raspberry tarts, which can be washed down with either a four-pack of Peroni Nastro, a choice of wine, or a bottle of Coca-Cola.

If you want to splash out and include a starter, Tesco has also created a £15 meal deal which includes an additional side dish and prosecco.  We’d opt for the slow-cooked beef bourguignon and the indulgent melt-in-the-middle chocolate ganache brownie. Bliss!

Waitrose: Price £20

As with the M&S deal, the Waitrose offering is one of the most expensive Valentine’s meal deals on offer this year, but we think it’s one of the best!

The dishes are all available in store – but they’ve produced a handy online menu so you can decide what to opt for before you go shopping.

Heston Blumenthal has provided two of the starters, either a Bloody Mary prawn cocktail or a chicken liver parfait, while there are vegan and vegetarian options too.  The deal includes two side dishes from a selection of 13 salads, grains, chips or roasted vegetables.

Another celebrity chef, Charlie Bingham, provides two of the main courses, either a classic lasagne or a rich cottage pie — but if you want to leave room for dessert there are also lighter options such as Sockeye salmon fillets or Yellowfin tuna steaks.

Heston features again on the dessert menu with a pair of espresso martini chocolate tortes or chocolate Bucks Fizz swirls.

There’s a choice of red or white wine and prosecco (or non-alcoholic alternatives) or a box of luxury chocolates which you and your loved can share while you watch a movie after dinner.

Asda: Price £15

If you prefer a plant-based diet, we think Asda have provided the best Valentine’s menu for you with a starter of duckless spring rolls with a hoisin dip, ‘melt my heart’ meatless burgers with triple cooked chips and a side of crushed peas —plus a vegan dark chocolate and raspberry heart-shaped pudding.

Alternatively, there are meat and fish options too which include a starter, main, two side dishes, a dessert and a choice of either a drink or chocolates.

We’d pick the tempura prawns followed by the Extra Special hand-finished prosciutto-wrapped pork loins, and finish with a sticky toffee pudding! Asda is also offering either a bottle of wine, fizz, sparkling non-alcoholic wine or a vegan-friendly bottle of Fentimans’ Rose Lemonade.

Make it a Valentine’s Day to remember

Even if you are not a natural chef, you can still impress your other half with an impressive dinner, as all the meal deals we’ve featured are pre-prepared and oven or microwave-ready…. And if you chose to pass off the meals as your own – we’re not telling — just make sure you hide the packaging!
