Oliver and Olivia Top the Most Popular Baby Names Poll

Traditional baby names are fading out, to be replaced by modern monikers from pop culture, it has been revealed in data recently released.

Research from the Office for National Statistics has shown that the most popular baby names in 2019 across England and Wales were Oliver (4932 names) and Olivia (4082 names).

Freya has entered the top 10 most popular girls’ names, along with Lily, replacing Ella and Emily.  There were no new entries in the boys’ names, but Arthur has continued to rise and is now in fourth place – its highest position since records started in 1904.

The boys’ name Taron has increased in popularity with 48 babies last year taking the name. The name is thought to be down to the popularity of ‘Rocketman’ star Taron Egerton.  Kylo has also increased in popularity, thanks to Star Wars character Kylo Ren.

Alfred is another boys’ name that has returned to the top 100 names for the first time since 1954. Other boys’ names that make the top 100 include Hudson, Ibrahim, and Oakley.

Girls’ names that are rising high are Isla, Ava, and Mia, at second, third, and fourth in the popularity stakes. There are only two new entrants in the girls’ name charts – Mabel and Lara – which have knocked Aisha and Francesca from the top 100.

David Corps, Vital Statistics Outputs Branch, Office for National Statistics commented: “Oliver and Olivia continued their reign as the top boys’ and girls’ names in 2019, but analysis shows choices in baby names can differ depending on the mother’s age. We found younger mothers opted for more modern girls’ names like Harper, which has seen a rise since the Beckhams named their daughter so in 2011, and shortened boys’ names like Freddie. In contrast, older mothers chose more traditional names such as Jack and Charlotte.

“Popular culture continues to influence the baby names landscape. Following Dua Lipa’s first UK number one single in 2017, the number of girls named Dua has doubled from 63 to 126 in 2019.”
